Netflix faces a content problem; doubtful it can regain past performance or retain users via live events.

another show favorite, and it's Netflix. And Netflix has actually made some moves here recently. Currently sitting at just about 77 bucks here.
Here's an interesting irony, I guess, to the story. Netflix content chief shrugs off YouTube threat, saying, quote, "Young people only watch short things isn't true."
Part of me wonders now if the uh content chief here is maybe not paying enough attention to this. Netflix, ticker NLX, their stock is trading about a half a percent higher Thursday in the pre-market as risk appetite improves.
Thankfully, Netflix is moving with the broader market, which again is up about a percent here, the the NASDAQ futures. Anyway, Netflix is moving with the broader market ahead of Thursday's open.
But meanwhile, chief content officer Bella Bajaria outlined how live events, global programming, advertising, and premium film and television could support the streaming giant's growth.
Aaria told CNBC on Thursday that Netflix takes an opportunistic approach to sports and live programming rather than pursuing every available rights package. The company is targeting events that can generate cultural re relevance, conversation, and appointment viewing.
That of course includes NFL games. Yep, that's how they got me. Boxing, concerts, and other live programming.
But Jaria said, "Live events can attract new subscribers and different audiences." That's true. Netflix can then use its broader film and television library to retain those viewers.
That, at least in my case, is not true. We've discussed adnauseium here, how Netflix has a content problem. And while this does seem to be a good move to try and increase the subscribers, really this underlying concept of keeping those subscribers, I'm not sure that that's going to be all that great.
I'm not sure it's going to be all that effective, I should say. Um, they still have a content problem. Is the content good enough? You folks will have to let me know. I know we've talked about that a lot.
Um, but that's opinion based and can be quite varying.
She says, quote, "You may come for this one big event that you've heard of or you're a big fan of that sport." End quote. Jaria had said that and she added that viewers may stay because Netflix continues to invest in other programming.
Advertising also supports the live strategy. Sports and other major events can give advertisers access to large global audiences. However, Baria said Netflix will remain disciplined when evaluating opportunities within its roughly $20 billion content budget.
Vajaria said Netflix should continue investing in compelling programming while maintaining financial discipline. She expressed confidence in the company's global slate and said Netflix should quote continue to stay the course at our strategy and the investment and being disciplined.
At the same time Netflix remains willing to change direction as its business and viewing habits evolve. But Jaria pointed to advertising and live programming as examples of that flexibility.
Quote, I think that's too handwavy or dismissive to say, oh, young people only watch short things. That's not true. End quote. She said that arguing that young viewers still show up when Netflix makes compelling shows they want to watch.
And that's the other thing here that I've noticed, and this isn't just with young people. This is with all age demographics that I talk about for the most part or that I talk to.
When there's something that they really like, again, coming down to content, when there's good content that people like, binge watching is like still a thing amongst people. And there is nothing short about watching eight hourong episodes in a row back to back without going outside and touching grass.
She said strong television shows and movies can still attract younger viewers, citing Wednesday and Stranger Things. Netflix also offers vertical video, podcasts, animation, and other formats.
However, Bajari has said the company should not simply chase every emerging format.
Netflix also remains open to hosting or integrating programming from other media companies. The company already partners with TF1 in France and has licensing relationships with other media companies.
But said future arrangements will depend on deal economics and partner strategies. She added that Netflix remains open to partnerships that can help businesses quote continue to grow and evolve.
Now, um you guys are going to have to let me know what you think on Netflix. I I understand um I understand how pervasive it is. I understand what the stock has done in the past.
My big hangup right now is can the stock actually return to its once great self? I I don't know that that's the case, especially after the split. I'd love to get an opinion here from the group
Um Jay says, "It'd be nice to have one subscription to watch any live sports." And you know what? This I think not talked about in this article, but this is absolutely like a key thing.
And you um it's it's like the whole like having to find which streaming service that's annoying enough, but when you start tallying up how much it costs to do all of this, it's like, man, is it even worth it anymore?
And now you're having Netflix compared against some of its peers, like, do I cut this? Netflix only has x amount of live events that I care about. Maybe I go with something else.
It just I'm with you, Jay. I think that's like an overarching problem to be quite to be quite honest with you.
