Palo Alto Networks is one of the world's largest cybersecurity companies , providing security across enterprise networks, cloud infrastructure, endpoints, operations, identities, and increasingly, AI applications and AI agents as well.
The company originally built its business around next- generation firewalls , but has evolved into a much broader cybersecurity platform that aims to integrate many individual security products under a single vendor.
After several major acquisitions, Palo Alto is now increasingly organizing the company around three broader platforms. Network security and artificial intelligence, identity security capabilities, as well as cloud security, software and support services.
When it comes to unique value, Palo Alto's core competitive advantage is what management calls " methodical". Instead of large organizations purchasing separate cybersecurity products from 10 or 20 vendors, Palo Alto wants customers to integrate those functions into a much smaller number of integrated Palo Alto platforms.
This can reduce complexity, limit integration problems , and allow security information collected in one part of the organization to improve threat detection elsewhere .
This becomes particularly important with artificial intelligence. As companies deploy AI applications and independent agents, Palo Alto can secure the network the agent operates on, the cloud infrastructure it accesses , the endpoints it uses, as well as its identity and permissions.
At its core, the company is trying to transform from just a collection of cybersecurity products into a comprehensive enterprise security architecture. Back this week on September 1, the key figures the company announced for the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2026 were particularly strong .
Fourth-quarter revenue reached $3.41 billion, a 34 % year-over-year increase, exceeding estimates of approximately $3.35 billion.
Full fiscal year 2026 revenues reached approximately 11.48 billion, an increase of about 24% from 9.22 billion last year. Next-generation security averaged recurring revenue of $9.1 billion, up 63 % year over year, and non-GAAP earnings per share of $2 against estimates of about 98 cents, also higher than the previous year's 95 cents.
However, when we scrutinize and look at the earnings results according to generally accepted accounting principles, they were much weaker. Palo Alto Co. reported a net loss of $282 million under generally accepted accounting principles , or about $0.35 per share, compared with a profit of $254 million in the same quarter last year.
One reason for this net loss is the announcement of the acquisition of Console, an AI-based platform designed to enable companies to create intelligent workflows using natural language.
Consequently, the costs associated with the acquisition and other adjustments contributed significantly to the gap between unadjusted and adjusted accounting profits.
First, the company announced strong organic growth in its next-generation security portfolio, which accelerated at double-digit rates, reflecting strong platform adoption and deepening customer commitments.
The company's strategy of shifting towards a platform model has led to high levels of customer retention. The company recorded a net revenue retention rate exceeding 120% and rapid expansion in multi-product deals, supported by the effective integration of major landmark acquisitions such as CyberArk and Cryosphere.
Management has provided consistent guidance and achieved an increase in remaining performance commitments, known as RPOs, which totaled $18.4 billion for the quarter, a 36% year-over-year increase.
This indicates strong coverage for future revenues , underscoring the long-term potential of its unified security platform .
Business profitability is also strong. For example, Palo Alto's gross profit margin is about 72% of sales, which is higher than the industry average of about 50%. The company's free cash flow margin is 34% , which is significantly higher than the sector average of 11 %.
The company also generated approximately $1.3 billion in adjusted free cash flow in the fourth quarter, and ended fiscal year 2026 with a very strong adjusted free cash flow margin of 38.4%.
This is important because it indicates that the company is generating profits and strong cash flows from its operations.
Despite the many positive aspects, we must always address some concerns as well. The most important issue in their earnings report is the 63% growth in recurring revenue for Next Generation Security, which is not necessarily entirely organic growth.
The number of shares of Palo Alto Networks also rose significantly by about 15% during the past year, largely due to the aforementioned acquisitions, which limited near-term earnings per share growth despite strong revenue expansion, resulting in weak earnings per share.
Also, the heavy reliance on mergers and acquisitions poses integration risks and has led to periods of shrinking margins, especially with large deals like CyberArt, raising concerns about the sustainability of organic growth.
Valuations remain a major concern, with the company's shares currently trading at around 78 times forward earnings, a premium nearly four times the sector average on many metrics, leaving little room for error if growth or margins fail to meet investor expectations.
Finally, despite revenue growth of a healthy 20% year-on-year compared to the sector average of 13%, earnings per share growth has recently slowed. Earnings per share growth is slowing to 13%, which is also lower than the sector average of around 18%.
Okay, now we move on to the part where we talk about the artistic image of the "Palo Alto" stock. Firstly, the technical picture for "PANW" stock is now mixed rather than uniformly bullish .
The stock started the year at around $185 and is still up about 79% since the beginning of the year, compared to gains of around 12% for the S&P 500 index.
Now, Palo Alto ’s long-term trend remains bullish, but the decline following the earnings announcement has caused significant short-term technical damage. For example, if we look at the chart for a year, we find that the stock has corrected by about 17% from its record closing high of around $396 on August 13 of this year.
The stock has now closed below its 50-day moving average, which calls for caution at least until the stock price recovers above this average.
From a momentum perspective, the MACD chart is now negative, confirming that momentum has turned downward following the earnings sell-off. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) has fallen to around 42, which is well below the readings above 70 it recorded during the rally.
This is important because Palo Alto is no longer in the "peak buy" zone technically, but it is not in the "peak sell" zone either. The relative strength index near 42 suggests that the stock may see further consolidation before reaching a sustained low.
In short, as early as 2026, investors were concerned that generative and proxy AI could disrupt traditional enterprise software and cybersecurity platforms. Palo Alto Networks is increasingly making the opposite argument.
Artificial intelligence does not necessarily eliminate the demand for cybersecurity, but rather greatly increases the demand for it. Palo Alto attempts to secure almost the entire lifecycle through network security and artificial intelligence via its surveillance technologies .
The optimistic view is that the "platform methodology" makes Palo Alto the winner in unifying the enterprise cybersecurity sector, while artificial intelligence creates a huge new security cycle that could last for years.
The pessimistic view is that the stock has already priced in a lot of this success (pre-priced ). Now, the debate surrounding the quarterly earnings report is whether organic growth, AI monetization, and the synergies of acquisitions can remain strong enough to justify the high valuation multiple.
Basically, when we look at the earnings report, the company has achieved the desired results. But technically speaking, the stock collapsed because expectations were moving faster than the business's actual performance.
