I believe the main reason many investors are talking about Planet Labs stock is because they have noticed increasing geopolitical tensions and conflicts in the regions where they invest, and they recognize the need for the services the company provides.
It is also one of the smaller companies serving the defense industry complex, and therefore has significant growth potential compared to its current situation. In its most recent conference call with Wall Street analysts, the company highlighted some new contracts, including a multi-million dollar deal with a European defense and intelligence client to provide high-resolution global imagery and operational planning support.
Therefore, it is not surprising to me that the region achieving the fastest growth for Planet Labs is Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
This is the main sector of growth for Planet Labs, although it has relationships with commercial institutions and local governments for reasons other than defense. Defense is not the only thing creating demand for Planet Labs, but it is the main growth engine right now and is likely to continue to be so for the foreseeable future.
In May, they launched their first air defense satellite just four months after signing a satellite services contract with them. Speed of deployment is also a differentiating factor for Planet Labs.
If you can deploy these services and satellites sooner, customer demand will be much greater.
Overall, the management team stated that progress in their satellite services pipeline was exceptional.
Their order book is growing, their line of business is expanding, and the company is investing to create increased capacity to serve these customers faster. They have launched more Earth-imaging satellites than any other company in the world.
This range gives them an advantage because they have a larger database of images. They combine this with artificial intelligence to provide analyses of these images, not just raw images for institutions and companies to evaluate themselves, but Planet Labs also provides analysis and evaluation of those images.
For their two most recent satellite services partnerships, they delivered their first satellite into orbit within two and four months of the contract being awarded. Compared to the many years that the space industry has historically taken.
Planet Labs is uniquely positioned to offer this service. They are the ones who own that data. They have that image database. They can see the differences in images over time and provide analyses to their clients based on that experience.
So this is a small and interesting company that I see as having great potential. I recently started covering this company and I'm looking into it more because I'm personally interested in its prospects, and seeing that the stock price has fallen from its recent highs makes it more attractive to me because it's not overvalued.
Of course, earlier this year everything related to space was generating a lot of buzz because of the initial public offering, and Planet Labs was one of the companies that benefited from that, but its stock price has fallen significantly from those record highs.
