The management team at Planet Labs stated that artificial intelligence allows the company to move into higher-value services while adding more distinction to their satellite imagery.

This makes sense to me because they have a repository of their own exclusive images, and if they can evaluate those images and offer this service to customers, it will allow them to generate revenue with a higher profit margin and a greater competitive advantage.

Let's take a look at this and what it could mean for Planet Labs investors in this video. Therefore, management not only believes that this sector is of higher value, which I agree with, but that it is also growing faster.

You can evaluate those images yourself, and you probably will anyway, but you will benefit from the additional services offered by the service provider, especially if that provider is able to build expertise in image evaluation, which is something Planet Labs can develop over time.

This is a competitive advantage they can develop early and expand over time by learning and getting customer feedback, knowing what is valuable, what customers prefer to pay for, the questions they want answered, and developing their expertise in those areas.

Planet Labs says its market share is less than 5% of the current total Earth observation market, excluding satellite services. They believe they are ready to rapidly expand their market share, and they believe that artificial intelligence expands the potential market opportunity for these capabilities by enabling users who lack geospatial expertise to leverage this vital data in their daily operations and expand applications and sectors.

So, artificial intelligence works to lower the barriers to entry for understanding this data. It reduces the time needed to evaluate these images if artificial intelligence is able to track and identify changes in these images over time.

This is what investors and institutions that monitor and need this data are looking for, and it is likely to track changes over time.

They also look at what is happening in the present moment, but changes over time are of paramount importance, and provide artificial intelligence with one of the most important ways to evaluate images.

So, you might think of some use cases, such as an oil company wanting to monitor a particular area to determine if it is worth exploring for potential oil reserves, right? That's one use case.

Or you could think of governments that would like to assess a particular area to see if there are any movements, right? To determine whether there has been an increase in movements in that area, an increase in personnel, or a buildup of military assets in a particular area.

Perhaps a few buildings were constructed in a particular area during the past week that were not there the week before. Things like this, where artificial intelligence can help comb through all these satellite images that are produced, helping you assess larger areas instead of having to review all these images individually.

You can have artificial intelligence evaluate, identify, compare, and highlight a specific set of images for further examination instead of evaluating the entire dataset of images provided.

Planet Labs is seeking to build on this capability. So, in July they successfully launched a technical demonstration of the next generation of "Pelecan" satellites. This pushes them forward on their path towards providing images with a resolution of up to 30 cm.

They are also expanding their fleet to support their partner, Carbon Mapper, and doubling their capacity to monitor methane and carbon dioxide, enabling higher visitor rates to sites.

Their new manufacturing facility in Germany is expected to double their production capacity, and they anticipate that production from this facility will begin by the end of this year.

There is already considerable interest from German and European governments in this new facility.

Their AI application has advanced to the open beta stage, and this pioneering tool focuses on making their massive global data archive queryable through natural language, and of course, they have 10 years of private data.

Therefore, all of this works to enhance the competitive advantage or customer value that Planet Labs offers to its clients, which include institutions and government agencies.

Currently, government institutions make up the majority of its customers, but if the company continues to expand this competitive advantage and customer value, it can expand beyond governments to reach the corporate sector, which is a much bigger opportunity.
