GLW is a hold; valuation is mixed with DCF suggesting overvaluation despite reasonable forward PE.

Business is booming for Corning as demand for its optical connectivity solutions, particularly within enterprise networks, where generative AI product sales nearly doubled year over year.
Overall, the company reported $4.74 billion in sales in its most recently completed quarter, and that was up 17% from the same time last year. The management team sounded optimistic about their long-term prospects, announcing a spring board 2030-40 plan where they expect their sales targeting annualized run rate of $20 billion by the end of 2026, $30 billion by the end of 2028, and $40 billion by the end of 2030.
So, does all of this mean that Corning stock is a buying opportunity for AI stock investors? Already, Corning has demonstrated phenomenal growth over the previous decade.
Revenue in 2017 totaled about $9 billion, and that's more almost doubled to $17 billion over the trailing 12-month period. And those figures I highlighted earlier suggest that Corning's management team expects revenue to accelerate from this point forward and reach levels that are nearly double where they are today.
Corning is in the right place at the right time with the right business opportunity, and that's been great news for investors that have seen the share price jump considerably in 2026.
But in Corning's case, it is demonstrating improving gross and operating profit margins, while also demonstrating revenue growth. Its strategic relationships with Meta Platforms, Amazon, Nvidia, and others are helping the company plan ahead, which makes operations a little bit more easier.
Its operating profit margin totaled 16 and 1/2% over the trailing 12-month period, and that's the highest since 2018. The management team is forecasting continued improvements in profitability.
Returns on invested capital are also improving. Over a trailing 12-month period, the company reported 9.6% ROIC, but over the most recently completed quarter, the ROIC improved further heading into the mid-double-digit range.
Management is also optimistic about this category, noting that it expects increases in future quarters and future years. I mentioned longer-term arrangements with its partners, and that also helps lower risks of investing capital in your company.
I mentioned Corning has delivered excellent returns for investors in 2026, but the stock is on a downtrend here. It was trading at above $250 at one point and now it's down to $147. Still, it's up over 67% year-to-date.
And that decrease more recently has caused a better valuation. Previously at the peak, it was trading at a forward PE of 60. It's now trading at about half that at a forward price to earnings of 34.
Which for a company with this kind of growth prospect with improving margins and ROIC, it seems like a reasonable valuation, even slightly undervalued in my opinion.
I also updated my discounted cash flow valuation for Corning, revising my estimates for cash flow higher. All of my revisions for Corning resulted in an increasing fair value estimate up to $93 per share.
However, that's well below the $147 the stock is currently trading for. Even adjusting for my margin of safety, the stock looks overvalued when using my discounted cash flow valuation.
So, comprehensively I'm getting a mixed picture on valuation. The forward PE ratio was showing me a stock that's slightly undervalued, while my discounted cash flow valuation is showing me a stock that's overvalued.
Comprehensively, I would say that the stock looks slightly overvalued at its current market prices. So, to answer the question I posed in the headline, is Corning stock a buying opportunity on this drop? I would say no. I would say not yet.
And I have a relatively low conviction level on that ranking because this company has been delivering so much improvement, and the revisions have consistently been moving higher.
And seemingly all of these AI companies, every 3 months I go back and I have to revise my estimates higher because demand comes in stronger than I was expecting, and my expectations have been pretty bullish on the AI industry overall.
So, I wouldn't be surprised if 3 months from now, when the company reports their next quarterly investor update, my revisions cause an upward movement in the fair value estimate, and I revise my buy, hold, or sell rating then. But, for now, I'm ranking it as a hold.
